  9.  AB    Cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes serious infections, particularly
  10.        vision-threatening retinitis, in persons with acquired immune deficiency
  11.        syndrome. Foscarnet has been demonstrated to delay the progression of
  12.        CMV retinitis and is an alternative to ganciclovir. Adverse reactions to
  13.        foscarnet include nephrotoxicity and hypocalcemia and can impact the
  14.        patient's ability to tolerate treatment. Nursing implications and
  15.        interventions essential in helping the patient achieve an optimal
  16.        outcome also are presented.
